A Mutual Respect: Paolo Banchero and God Shammgod on Mentorship, Growth, and Orlando’s Bright Future

The dynamic between player and mentor in the NBA often dictates the speed at which young talent transitions into sustained excellence. For Orlando Magic cornerstone Paolo Banchero, having the guidance of legendary coach God Shammgod provided a critical foundation—one built on communication, wisdom and mutual admiration.

Banchero on Shammgod’s Holistic Impact

Reflecting on their time together during Shammgod’s tenure in Orlando, Banchero emphasized that the veteran mind offered insights that went well beyond basic on-court skill development:

“Sham was a huge help when he was here,” Banchero told me on Monday. “Not only on the court, but off the court as well, just the communication and some of the wisdom he gave me.”

Even with coaching roles evolving across the league, the personal line of communication remains wide open between the two.

“We still keep in contact,” Banchero added. “He texted me this morning, actually, so me and him do talk. He’s a great guy, a great basketball mind, so it was a blessing to be able to work with him for a season and get to learn from him as well.”

Shammgod on Orlando’s Young Trio and Future Potential

The admiration is entirely mutual. Speaking with Landon Buford, Shammgod expressed high praise not only for Banchero, but for Orlando’s broader young core—including Anthony Black and Desmond Bane.

“It’s been good working with him, Anthony Black, and Desmond Bane. It’s been good; you just have to keep pushing,” Shammgod shared with Buford.

“They are young and are going to keep getting better and better. All three of them are going to be future stars in the NBA.”

Passing Down Legendary Knowledge

Shammgod’s role in developing young stars also involves bridging generations. When asked whether any of Orlando’s young players inquired about his past training sessions with legendary figures like Kobe Bryant, Shammgod highlighted the natural curiosity of the locker room:

“AB, he and I talked about that; he also asked about Kai and Luka,” Shammgod revealed. “We are just trying to get it right and make sure everyone gets healthy. So, we can make this push.”

The Takeaway

The alignment between Banchero’s statements to me and Shammgod’s comments to Landon Buford paints a clear picture: Shammgod left an indelible mark on Orlando’s developmental environment. Through off-court wisdom, lessons drawn from icons like Kobe, Kyrie and Luka and an unshakeable belief in the high ceiling of Banchero, Black and Bane, the mentor-mentee relationship remains a driving force behind the Magic’s pursuit of a deep postseason run
