Charles Oakley on NBA Toughness, the Knicks’ New Identity & Why the Cleveland Cavaliers Needs LeBron James’ Voice

In the pantheon of NBA enforcers, few names carry as much weight as Charles Oakley. Known for his grit, his rebounding prowess, and an uncompromising philosophy on what it takes to win, the Knicks legend doesn’t pull punches when discussing the modern game.

From the Madison Square Garden hardwood to the bright lights of reality television, Oakley’s perspective remains rooted in one thing: toughness.

I caught up with OAk by phone this evening to discuss the current landscape of the Eastern Conference, the evolving roster in New York, and why he believes leadership—not just talent—is the missing ingredient for teams looking to reach the mountaintop.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: Who do you like in the Eastern Conference matchup between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Detroit Pistons?

Charles Oakley: Detroit. Cleveland just ain’t tough enough. You know, it’s just, it’s just what time it is. You ain’t tough, you ain’t going nowhere. You gotta show you’re tough—big ass gotta be tough. You gotta play with a sense of purpose, hit somebody. You ain’t willing to do that, you’re going home.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: So you’re not giving Cleveland any chance against Detroit?

Charles Oakley: No. Yeah, well, they don’t play like they deserve a chance. That’s how I go. I mean, everybody saw Atlanta was getting high on the hog, but then the Knicks won three big games by double digits and ran away with it. They’re battle-tested from the last couple of years with Brunson and KAT. But the supporting cast—OG stepped his game up. They’re just hungry. It showed the last few games against Atlanta. But Cleveland played around with Toronto; they got out of it, but I don’t think they can play around with Detroit. They’re going to be real tough.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: What does Cleveland need that they’re missing?

Charles Oakley: Metaphorically, Cleveland has been on a cruise, but you ain’t been to no parties. You want to come out, shake a leg, and show people what you got, and they’re not doing that.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: Does Karl Anthony Towns remind you of anybody that you’ve ever been teammates with or seen?

Charles Oakley: KAT… probably anybody. I mean, back in the day, they had a lot of stretch fours—Rasheed Wallace, Derrick Coleman, whoever. I mean, KAT is different. You know, he’s a 7’1″ guy who can shoot the three and put it on the floor. It’s a problem in this day and age if we go to him. I think the Knicks should just run pick-and-roll with him and Brunson and let those two guys make plays for everybody else. He’s efficient. You got the bodies, use them.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: Is it true to say that the Knicks are so loaded that people sleep on OG Anunoby?

Charles Oakley: They ain’t so loaded. I mean, you got 12 to 15 guys, and you’re talking about two guys? That ain’t loaded. You got 13 bullets left! Now, OG is OG. He played with Toronto, they won a championship. He’s a quiet guy, big and solid. I still don’t see why Toronto got rid of him. But you know, they don’t want to pay one guy, then they pay the same guy who ain’t better than him, I don’t think. They pay who they want to pay.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: How would Jose Alvarado fit in your era of basketball?

Charles Oakley: Jose who? Who is he playing with?

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: The Knicks, the backup point guard. Puerto Rican brother… formerly New Orleans.

Charles Oakley: I don’t know. I mean, he ain’t tough enough to be enough. It’s easy to play in the spirit. Like a lot of guys who come in and play—oh, he averaged 15, he’s getting numbers. Then when they get that contract and start, it’s a disciplinary thing. You kind of slow your game down, adjust with what you got, play with other guys. I mean, he’s good at what he does as a backup. He can put on the pressure, get up and guard full court. He ain’t gonna play much with Brunson there, so we’ll see what happens.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: Many people don’t give LeBron and the Lakers a chance against Oklahoma City. How do you see it?

Charles Oakley: If you go by analytics and stats and this and that… but when you’re talking about LeBron, the dog was dancing so far because he raised everybody up to a different level. It’s showed for years that you got to knock him out. So I give him a fighting chance. I’m not saying they’re going to lose in four or five. You never know what happens.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: Would you like to see him go back to Cleveland before the end of his career?

Charles Oakley: Yes, in Cleveland for two years. Hopefully get Cleveland to the promised land again. I can see that happen. You don’t need a lot, just need some guys to buy in. I think Cleveland just ain’t got no leadership. We got big-name guys, but that doesn’t make you a leader. They need someone to get on their big asses and keep them engaged. Someone to hold them accountable. Management is just riding it out, selling out every night, just happy with what’s going on. They need that one other voice. They need a voice like LeBron.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: What about the Knicks? LeBron coming to the Knicks instead of Cleveland. If not Cleveland, what about New York?

Charles Oakley: I don’t think New York needs LeBron. They just got to play smart. They know that KAT and Brunson are the main two of the team. I think they could have won. I think they could be better than OKC; they just had to get there.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: What about Giannis in New York?

Charles Oakley: Everybody is saying Giannis to New York. I mean, you gotta be careful. Can he play with all the other guys? I know he’s a downhill guy. With Brunson, who are you going to get rid of? Brunson, KAT, or OG? In New York, when they play, they space the floor. Giannis is not a pick-and-roll guy like KAT, who is a three-point threat. I don’t know why you’ve got to change. Giannis is going to have the ball in his hand a lot like in Milwaukee, and I don’t think that’s going to happen in New York with Brunson. But he might be that interchangeable piece, just like Toronto had with Kawhi Leonard or DeRozan. It might be that change—a piece for a piece. Giannis has got more force than KAT, maybe. That might be what they need. But we got to wait and see. If they win this year, they don’t need to change the team.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: Last question. Real Housewives of Atlanta—you’re in it. How cool was that?

Charles Oakley: It’s cool for my wife. I think I’m just thrown in, but people like me because they know I’m not about no bullshit. I’m not going to take no shit. My wife, she’s holding on. You get in the ring, you do what you want, you take a chance. But she’s not gonna go for too much dumb shit from those other girls. So honestly, they better be careful. It’s hard to fight her—and me too.

The Final Word

Whether he’s dissecting the spacing of the modern Knicks or navigating the drama of reality TV, Charles Oakley remains one of the most authentic voices in sports. His message is clear: talent gets you on the court, but leadership and “force” keep you there. As the NBA landscape shifts toward analytics and “stretch” bigs, the legend reminds us that at the end of the day, you still have to be willing to “hit somebody” to win.
