The Spark in the Garden: Q&A with New York Knicks Guard Jose Alvarado Ahead of Game 5 vs. Atlanta Hawks

The energy inside Madison Square Garden tonight won’t just be felt—it will be heard across all five boroughs. As the New York Knicks prepare to host the Atlanta Hawks for a critical Game 5, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

With the series currently knotted at 2-2, history tells us that the winner of tonight’s clash has an 81.5% chance of taking the series.

New York dominated the opener, but Atlanta has proven to be a resilient foe, behind the veteran poise of CJ McCollum and the steady rise of Jalen Johnson.

For the Knicks, the mission is clear: protect home court and reclaim the momentum. To do that, they’ll lean on their identity—grit, defense, and the relentless spark provided by Brooklyn’s own, Jose Alvarado.

I caught up with the Knicks’ “energy guy” to discuss his transition to the city, the playoff atmosphere, and his deep-rooted New York connections.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: What’s the difference between dreaming about playing for the Knicks and the reality of actually being here? Because some say it’s a dream, but you’ve said, “I’m not dreaming.” How does it feel to finally lock in with this organization and wear that jersey?

Jose Alvarado: You know, it’s something that is just real. It’s really dope to be a part of this. Just to be in this jersey and be able to lock in a little more within this organization… It’s amazing.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: Being a New York guy playing at the Garden, I have to ask: Have the ticket requests from the family been higher now that we’re in the playoffs, or was the regular season flow just as intense?

Jose Alvarado: I mean, they know better, man! The price goes up, so I try to stay away from all that. They have a lot of respect for me, so they don’t really ask like that.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: When I look at this series so far, it feels like a game of Connect 4—or even a classic Country Western. As you look ahead to Game 5, what are you preparing for?

Jose Alvarado: Well, we just gotta get ready for a fight. We know they’re a great team—they’ve been showing us that—so we have to go back home and take care of business.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: You are known league-wide as the “energy guy.” How do you view your role here in New York compared to what you were doing in New Orleans?

Jose Alvarado: Nothing is really different, honestly. I think that’s the reason I’m in the NBA. I just have to be myself and create that energy—whether I’m playing, not playing, or just doing anything that brings a spark. I don’t see a difference in the job.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: You’re a Georgia Tech guy. Stephon Marbury is a Georgia Tech guy. There are so many alumni sitting courtside. As a New York native, what has that connection been like for you now that you’re officially a Knick?

Jose Alvarado: When I got the call and they saw I was a Knick, all of them showed love. They showed love when I was out there, and whenever I’m on the court, they all say what’s up to me. It’s pretty dope seeing those guys that I grew up watching and hearing all about.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: Who have you really gotten to know since you’ve been back? Not just within the Knicks, but in “the world” specifically?

Jose Alvarado: The world, man! Everybody. But Melo? Melo has been a big, big part of the calls and the journey. He’s probably the biggest guy I’ve connected with right there.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: Is it a “weird” dynamic being a former teammate of CJ McCollum in New Orleans, and now you guys are going at each other in this atmosphere?

Jose Alvarado: It’s great. We both love this atmosphere and we’re both highly competitive. We used to do this in practice, so it’s great to be a part of this now—for him and for me.

As the orange and blue faithful descend upon the World’s Most Famous Arena tonight, the narrative goes beyond the X’s and O’s. It’s about the brotherhood of the game—the mentor-mentee bond between Carmelo Anthony and Alvarado, and the high-stakes chess match between former teammates like Alvarado and McCollum.

In a series where every possession feels like a heavyweight bout, the Knicks aren’t just looking for points; they are looking for that “spark” Alvarado mentioned. If New York can harness that energy and defend their turf, they’ll head back to Atlanta one step closer to the next round.

The lights are bright, the Garden is waiting, and for Jose Alvarado, it’s no longer a dream—it’s time to take care of business.
