PHOENIX – The lights are a little brighter tonight at the Footprint Center. The air is a little thinner. For the Portland Trail Blazers, the 82-game marathon has officially transitioned into a high-stakes sprint. Tonight, they face the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Play-In Tournament, a 7-vs-8 showdown where the winner punches a ticket to a first-round series, and the loser falls into a do-or-die elimination game.
For a Portland team that many pundits expected to be at the bottom of the standings, being here at all feels like a victory. But inside the locker room, the “just happy to be here” narrative doesn’t exist. This is a group defined by a unique blend of veteran championship DNA, the fearless energy of youth, and a coaching staff fueled by some of the greatest minds in the game.
The Architect: Tiago Splitter’s Reflective Rise

At the center of this turnaround is acting head coach Tiago Splitter, who has navigated the tumultuous waters of an NBA season with a poise that belies his “acting” title. Taking over the reins of a rebuilding roster is a task that requires both tactical brilliance and emotional intelligence. For Splitter, the journey hasn’t been a solitary one.
When asked at what point during the course of the season he took a second to assess and take in what he inherited, Splitter admitted to ScoopB.com that the process is constant.
“That’s a good question,” Splitter told me.
“I think there are many times and not just once. Sometimes you sit in your room, you’re away in a hotel and you’re thinking about the season and what’s going on and try to think a little bit outside of myself and try to look at what I’m doing.”
Splitter, a former NBA champion himself, hasn’t been afraid to ask for directions. He has leaned on a massive network of basketball minds to help steer the Blazers’ ship into the postseason.“
Guys that I call and talk to? It’s been a lot,” Splitter revealed to ScoopB.com.
“Guys that I worked with, assistant coaches on the National Team from Brazil, guys like Pop [Gregg Popovich], Brett Brown, assistant guys throughout the league that I know; a lot of guys. They all know what I was going through and are just trying to send me some wisdom and support me throughout this season.”
The Veteran Compass: Jrue Holiday

If Splitter is the navigator, Jrue Holiday has been the compass. Acquired in a trade that signaled Portland’s refusal to fully “tank,” Holiday has provided the stability necessary for the Blazers to finish the year as a Play-In team.
While fans and analysts look for a specific “turning point” during the All-Star Break where the team’s playoff aspirations became a reality, Holiday—true to his professional nature—sees it through a much simpler lens. For him, the “click” wasn’t a moment, but a mindset of adaptability and sacrifice.“I honestly don’t remember,” Holiday told me when asked when things started to click for him and the team collectively.
“Honestly, I just go out there and play. I think that whatever experience that I have, I just try to go out there and take advantage of it; whatever situation it is.”
Holiday’s presence has allowed the rest of the roster to flourish, knowing they have a two-time champion managing the floor. Whether he’s tasked with locking down an opponent’s best player or facilitating the offense, his focus remains singular.“There might have been some games where I had to go and score and make plays, there’s others where I had to go and play defense and Deni would go,” Holiday explained to ScoopB.com.
“If Deni wasn’t playing, Jerami would go and things like that, so, honestly I couldn’t tell you when or whatever, but, I think it’s just about winning and it doesn’t matter how you win or what you do on the stats sheet, just go out there and do what’s best for the team.”
The Spark: Scoot Henderson’s Championship Dream

While Holiday provides the floor, Scoot Henderson provides the ceiling. The explosive young guard has seen his game reach new heights as the season progressed. For Henderson, the postseason isn’t just a goal; it’s the realization of a dream that crystallized during a specific moment in NBA history.
When we spoke about when he truly fell in love with the game and what series made him love the NBA Playoffs, Henderson pointed to a recent heavyweight battle that served as his ultimate inspiration.“I can name so many watching over the years, but I guess what really got me where I wanna be at was pretty recent,” Henderson told me.
“It was when Golden State and the Celtics; Rob [Robert Williams III] was on that team. Golden State had won. Game six, I think it was The Finals actually, but that was, I’m like: ‘Oh my God!’ We were at TD Garden and the atmosphere was just crazy man. I was blessed to even watch that game. That’s when I thought, ‘that’s where I want to be one day.’”
Tonight, Henderson gets his first real taste of that atmosphere. He’ll be sharing the floor with his teammate Robert Williams III, the same player he watched in that high-stakes environment at TD Garden, as they attempt to replicate that championship intensity.
The Journey Starts Tonight: Portland vs. Phoenix

For the Trail Blazers to secure a victory tonight, they must execute a strategy rooted in defensive versatility, momentum, and mental toughness. This starts with Jrue Holiday’s elite ability to anchor the perimeter defense, which will be pushed to its limit against the Suns’ high-octane backcourt. Beyond individual matchups, the team must sustain the selfless “post-break” momentum Holiday previously highlighted to ScoopB.com, ensuring that players like Deni Avdija and Jerami Grant remain ready to step up and produce as the game dictates.
Ultimately, the outcome will hinge on Portland’s poise under pressure; as Tiago Splitter noted, leaning on collective wisdom and experience in these high-stakes moments will be the definitive factor between moving forward or facing an early exit.
As Tiago Splitter stands on the sideline tonight, he won’t just be representing himself; he’ll be carrying the collective knowledge of Popovich and the mentors who guided him here. For the Blazers, the journey starting tonight isn’t just about a playoff seed—it’s about a franchise finding its identity in the crucible of the postseason.
The road to the 2026 NBA Playoffs begins now. Tip-off is at 10:00 pm ET.
