Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: Have you heard the story about how LeBron met Rich Paul?
Warren Moon: [laughs]
Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: When was the first time you heard that story? It involved your jersey.
Warren Moon: I don’t remember exactly, because when I heard it, I heard it a lot of different times from a lot of different people. Most people don’t think I’m aware of it, but I am. Rich has got my jersey in his studio where he does his podcast. They’ve become good friends and I always joke with him, asking, “Where’s my commission for bringing you two together?” You guys have created an empire together and it was because of me!
Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: Back in the early 2000s, there were a lot of rappers wearing Mitchell & Ness throwback jerseys. If you happened to be channel surfing and saw them rocking it on TV, or if younger family members told you about it… Did that make you feel young? What were some of the things people in your circle were saying when they saw those music videos?
Warren Moon: It wasn’t so much that it made me feel young, it just made me feel like my era was a memorable era. I’ve always thought the ’80s and ’90s were one of the best eras you could live in. The music was the best, hip-hop was really getting started back then and improving from there, and you had great superstars like Michael Jackson and Prince as entertainers. I just thought that era of time was a great time to be in. Then you see all the things going on now with the throwbacks—jerseys, throwback uniforms, Starter jackets, all those different things. They were all during my time, so I was just proud that I was a part of it.
Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: When you were playing, who were some people in other sports that you enjoyed watching and related to based on their style?
Warren Moon: Well, I’m a big basketball guy. That’s my favorite sport and I would have played it if I was a little bit taller! Magic Johnson was a really good friend of mine during those days. We spent a lot of time eating dinner and talking back in the day. Clyde Drexler was a really good friend of mine in Houston when I was there for all those years, and Charles Barkley. Basketball players were guys that I really looked up to and I loved the way they played the game.
