When WORDSWITHSCOOP officially launches Season 2 on Labor Day, it marks more than just a return to the digital airwaves—it represents the culmination of a decade-long journalistic evolution. What began as a signature hashtag during my print reporting era has transformed into one of digital media’s most compelling, multi-platform video series.
The Origins: From Print Bylines to Digital Airwaves

Long before the studio cameras were rolling, #WORDSWITHSCOOP served as a digital stamp for my print profile features at both The Source Magazine and RESPECT Magazine. The hashtag was created to signal a specific brand of candid, deep-dive storytelling, giving readers an authentic window into the minds of sports legends, music moguls and cultural pioneers.
During those seminal years, the banner framed extended conversations with global heavyweights and superstars. In athletics and sports media, that meant sitting down with powerhouses like LeBron James, Allen Iverson, Michael Vick, Jon “Bones” Jones, Dwight Howard, James Harden, John Wall and Stephen A. Smith. At the same time, the feature captured the blueprint of cultural architects who shaped entertainment, including Ms. Lauryn Hill, DJ Khaled, Play from Kid ‘n Play and DJ Envy.
Equal weight was always given to grassroots storytelling, using the hashtag to platform emerging and regional talent before they hit global radars. A dedicated feature on Lil Chris highlighted the raw potential and sounds straight out of Chicago’s music scene, while an introductory spotlight on Louuii Lyfe tracked underground talent actively shifting the culture. In Philadelphia, a breakdown of Ms. Jade explored the local landscape, her career timeline and hip-hop history, alongside an early feature on Cam Anthony that highlighted his talent as a singing child prodigy long before his national breakout. Rounding out regional culture, Neef Buck took a deep dive into regional movements, fashion and the crossover between street culture and athletics, while Cliff Po & DJ Tarzan were spotlighted for their work with The Next Big Showcase, breaking new indie talent across New York and New Jersey.
Season 1: A Breakout Summer

Translating a text-based hashtag into a visual, long-form interview format was the next logical leap. Season 1 of WORDSWITHSCOOP proved that audiences are hungry for substance over soundbites, delivering a summer run packed with newsmaking, unvarnished conversations across hip-hop, sports, comedy and activism.
The summer slate kicked off with powerful voices across comedy and hip-hop. Tiffany Haddish brought unfiltered discussions on Hollywood, comedy and personal resilience, while Blueface offered a rare look inside the music industry, public perception and navigating viral fame. Legendary hip-hop history took center stage as Da Brat reflected on her career longevity and industry evolution, paired alongside RZA, who delved into the Wu-Tang legacy, creative philosophy and film scoring.
The narrative scope expanded further through deep dives into activism, faith and lifestyle. Mysonne explored the vital intersection of hip-hop culture, community activism and civic responsibility, while LisaRaye McCoy broke down culture, career longevity and navigating the entertainment landscape. Concluding the powerhouse lineup, Kirk Franklin detailed his gospel music influence, crossover impact and creative faith.
Looking Ahead to Season 2

As Season 2 premieres this Labor Day, the series builds on its core mission of bridging the gap between sports, music and urban culture without losing the raw, conversational authenticity that defined the original magazine pages. From ink on paper to high-definition video, the format has changed, but the core objective remains intact—giving the culture direct access, straight from the source.
Setting the tone for this next chapter, basketball icon Dr. J (Julius Erving) will serve as guest number one, officially kicking off WORDSWITHSCOOP Season 2 on Labor Day, September 7.
