Jerry Stackhouse: From All-Star Scorer to the Top of the UNC Shortlist

A two-time NBA All-Star who played 18 seasons in the league, Jerry Stackhouse has successfully traded his jersey for a clipboard. After a decorated stint as a head coach in the G-League and the SEC, Stackhouse is currently serving as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors under Steve Kerr. However, following seismic shifts in the college basketball landscape this week, his path may soon lead back to where it all began.

The Foundation and the “Universal Language”

Stackhouse’s coaching journey is rooted in a prestigious lineage. Drafted third overall in 1995, he was a superstar at the University of North Carolina under Dean Smith. It was during his playing days with the Dallas Mavericks, under head coach Avery Johnson, that he realized the principles of winning were universal.

“Avery took over and it was just the same language that I learned from Coach Smith,” Stackhouse noted. “I got a lot of that from [Gregg] Popovich, who got it from Larry Brown, who got it from Coach Smith. Once we aligned our minds, I realized coaching was something I could do because Avery put me in that role.”

A Proven Track Record

Stackhouse proved his tactical mettle early, taking the helm of Raptors 905 and leading them to back-to-back Finals appearances and a G-League championship in 2017. Named the league’s Coach of the Year that same season, he demonstrated an innate ability to develop talent—a skill he later took to Vanderbilt and now to a championship-caliber staff in Golden State.

His credibility as a “players’ coach” remains unmatched. Having shared the floor with Michael Jordan, Dirk Nowitzki, and Allen Iverson, Stackhouse speaks with an authority that resonates with modern stars and youngsters alike.

The Call of the Carolinas

The conversation around Stackhouse has reached a fever pitch following the news that North Carolina parted ways with head coach Hubert Davis on Tuesday, March 24, after five seasons. The dismissal came on the heels of consecutive Round of 64 exits, leaving the “blue blood” program searching for a leader who can restore the Tar Heels to elite consistency.

In the days since Davis’ firing, many media experts and alumni have lobbied for Stackhouse to be the next head coach in Chapel Hill. Proponents argue that his combination of NBA pedigree, head coaching experience, and deep roots in the Dean Smith era make him the ideal candidate to bridge the program’s storied past with the modern era of NIL and the transfer portal.

Full Circle

Whether Stackhouse remains in the Bay Area or returns to his roots, his philosophy remains unchanged. He continues to apply the lessons learned from mentors like Don Nelson and even those he once clashed with, like Rick Carlisle.

“I’ve played for a lot of smart coaches,” Stackhouse says. “Now I’m just trying to apply those things and input my own touch to develop guys and build a winning system.”

As the search for the next leader of Carolina Basketball intensifies, all eyes are on the Warriors’ bench to see if one of UNC’s favorite sons will finally return home to take the reins.
