Sources: Phoenix Suns Eyeing Diverse Pool of Candidates for Next Head Coach, Mike Malone Drawing Strong Internal Interest

The Phoenix Suns are in the early stages of their head coaching search, and while a final list has not yet been finalized, league sources tell me the franchise is prioritizing a fresh direction — and diversity will be a key part of that vision.

Phoenix is still compiling names for their coaching shortlist, but one name gaining traction internally is former Denver Nuggets head coach Mike Malone. Multiple league sources have shared that Malone could get a strong look from the Suns’ front office in the coming weeks.

Malone, who coached the Nuggets for nearly a decade, helped architect Denver’s transformation from a fringe playoff team to an NBA champion in 2023. His defensive-minded approach and ability to galvanize stars like Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray have made him a respected figure around the league. While he was recently let go, his résumé speaks volumes — and teams in need of structure and identity are expected to come calling.

As for Phoenix, the coaching search follows a turbulent and underwhelming 2024-25 campaign that saw the Suns fail to capitalize on a roster loaded with star power in Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal. Now, with pressure mounting to maximize their championship window, team governor Mat Ishbia and GM James Jones are approaching this hire with heightened intentionality.

A source close to the situation says the Suns are seeking not only tactical leadership but a bench voice that reflects a broader sense of inclusivity. “There’s an understanding in that building that this next hire has to reflect the present-day NBA — not just from a basketball perspective, but culturally too,” the source shared. “There’s a real desire to bring in a coach who can connect with a diverse locker room and lead with both emotional intelligence and edge.”

While Malone is certainly not the only candidate under consideration, his experience managing superstars, postseason runs, and media scrutiny may give him an edge. His candidness, accountability, and tough-nosed coaching style could resonate in a Suns locker room looking for stability and identity.

Other potential candidates are expected to emerge as the Suns continue their internal meetings. Given Ishbia’s aggressive track record since purchasing the team — from the Durant trade to major coaching moves — don’t expect Phoenix to drag this process out longer than necessary.

One thing is certain: the Suns know the stakes, and this hire could very well define the next era of basketball in The Valley.
