Memphis Grizzlies Fire Head Coach Taylor Jenkins: Players Stunned, Ja Morant Devastated

In a move that has stunned the NBA community, the Memphis Grizzlies announced today the dismissal of head coach Taylor Jenkins, despite the team’s strong 44-29 record, which ties them with the Los Angeles Lakers for the fifth-best in the Western Conference.

While it is not yet clear why Jenkins was relieved of his duties, sources tell ScoopB.com that Grizzlies players were stunned by the firing of Jenkins and many found out about the news of Jenkins’ firing on social media and on television.

“Goddamn, what transpired,” a trusted Grizzlies source told me by phone this afternoon.

“I guess it’s the business.”

Grizzlies star Ja Morant was stunned by Jenkins’ dismissal and sources tell me that Morant responded to the news by saying: “Oh shit.”

“Ja was surprised,” a team source shared with me about Jenkins’ and Morant’s relationship.

“Ja loves him.”

Jenkins, 40, departs as the winningest coach in franchise history, boasting a 250-214 record since his appointment in June 2019. Under his leadership, the Grizzlies secured three playoff appearances and experienced significant development among key players. Despite a commendable turnaround from last season’s 27-55 finish, the team has faced recent struggles, losing five of their past seven games.

The decision has reportedly left players blindsided, with many learning about the firing through social media channels. Star point guard Ja Morant, who has missed 30 games this season, including the last six leading up to Jenkins’ firing, was particularly devastated by the news.

Assistant coach Tuomas Iisalo, previously the head coach of Paris Basketball and named coach of the year in Finland, will step in as interim head coach. The Grizzlies face a critical matchup against the Lakers on Saturday, a game that could have significant playoff implications.

As the team navigates this unexpected transition, questions arise about the timing and rationale behind the decision, especially with the playoffs looming. Fans and analysts alike will be closely watching how the Grizzlies respond on the court in the coming weeks.
