In a recent interview with The Art of Dialogue, Beanie Sigel says that Jay-Z wrote Memphis Bleek’s lyrics.
“Of course, Jay helped Bleek out on a lot of sh*t,” Sigel asserted. “You can hear it.”
Sigel then stated that fans should pay attention to Bleek’s rhyme schemes and added that they sounded similar to Jay-Z’s and also claimed that when all three artists collaborated on tracks, Jay-Z would allegedly “cheat” to make Bleek look better.
“Especially if us three was on a record together,” Sigel said in the interview.
“If I ain’t right there with Jay, too far behind him, Bleek wouldn’t have stood a chance.”
During Beanie Sigel’s interview he also started criticizing Bleek’s contribution to Rocafella Records compilation album, The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, which was released in 2000, but is credited as a Jay-Z album.
According to Sigel, Memphis Bleek was absent from several tracks during the album’s early sessions “Let’s just say it was five records. Me and Jay and Bleek was supposed to be on ’em. And he wasn’t on none of them. Like for weeks,” said Sigel.
Why is Beanie Sigel adamant about this? I asked Memphis Bleek. “I have no clue bro,” Memphis Bleek told me via text message.
“I sell D’usse and be chillin. No hard feelings though. If you saw it, then stand on it. He said he didn’t, so I don’t know.”
Memphis Bleek is adamant that Jay-Z did not write his rhymes. “Jay didn’t write them,” Memphis Bleek shared with me via text.
Bleek added jokingly: “Amil and Biggs wrote for me all this time.”
This isn’t the first time Jay-Z has been accused of helping Memphis Bleek with verses. In fact, Damon Dash made a similar claim last year. “Jay was writing a lot of his rhymes, so if Jay retired, that meant Bleek’s business would’ve ended too,” Dash told The Art Of Dialogue.
The tension between Beanie Sigel, Jay-Z, and Memphis Bleek is sad because Rocafella’s history in hip hop is forever cemented and was groundbreaking in a lot of ways. However, in recent years the group has been outspoken about their experiences in various interviews.
While Memphis Bleek is selling Dusse, he’s also used his time in being productive in the podcasting space. He hosts his Roc Solid Podcast, which is powered by Drink Champs. The podcast is hosted by both he and Brian B.Dot Miller and has featured guests like Young Chris, Guru, Freeway, Noreaga and Ja Rule.
Prior to starting his podcast, Memphis Bleek has been vocal about his peers similarly to Beanie Sigel. While chatting with Scoop B Radio back in 2022, Memphis Bleek stated that Nas would not be a worthy candidate to battle Jay-Z in a Versus battle. “Nas don’t have enough songs to compete,” Bleek told me.
“And it’s no disrespect to him, he just don’t – like, he just don’t. Jay can battle somebody with just his B-side concert catalog and it’ll still be better than some people’s A-side.”
